The New York Times (7/23, Hernández) reports Chinese parents “were in an uproar on Monday” after a government investigation and news reports showed that “hundreds of thousands of children might have been injected with faulty vaccines, the latest scandal to hit the nation’s troubled drug industry.” Reports indicate Changchun Changsheng “had violated standards in making at least 250,000 doses of vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough.” The news “rattled public confidence in the government and rekindled fears that corruption and abuse in the nation’s vast pharmaceutical industry are placing ordinary people at risk.”

CNN (7/23, Westcott, Wang) reports that “many of the defective vaccines were already on the market and being given to Chinese children, as part of the mandatory national vaccination program.” Many have been recalled, “but there is no information at this stage as to how they could affect the health of those children who have already been injected.”

Reuters (7/23, Jourdan, Ruwitch) reports Changsheng was previously “found to have falsified production documents related to a rabies vaccine that is given routinely to Chinese babies as young as three months, underscoring the challenge the world’s second-biggest drug market faces cleaning up its image as it aims to promote its vaccines globally.”

Bloomberg News

Bloomberg News (7/24) reports President Xi Jinping described the scandal as “shocking” and called for action against those responsible for violations, Xinhua reported Monday. Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal (7/23, Rana, Subscription Publication) reports Chinese Premier Li Keqiang called for a government investigation into the company’s vaccine production and sales. State authorities have tried to clean up the country’s drug industry but safety scandals involving drug ingredients, milk, and infant formulas in recent years have further angered the public.

Reuters (7/24, Jourdan) further reports that the scandal “has prompted speculation that mainland Chinese would take their children outside mainland China for vaccines as has happened with previous scandals, which could lead to a shortage in Chinese-controlled regions like Hong Kong or Macau.”
